Reiki experience
Feb. 14th, 2004 10:34 amI went to a Reiki circle last night with some friends from school (including a Reiki Master and skeptic...interesting combo :) ). Never been before, nor have I seen Reiki practiced before (I have observed Therapeutic Touch during my medical days, which has similar ideology & methodology, but with differing origins). If you are not familiar with Reiki, the idea is (as I understand it) that it is a light touch therapy that helps "balance" your "energy" (based on the idea of chakras, chi/ki, etc). Not quite sure what I think of it in terms of what effects it may have ("real," "psychological," etc), but it was an interesting experience.
First we went around and did intros. It was apparently an unusually large group (over 50, usually 20-30). Then we did some quiet individual meditation, which was relaxing. Then "receivers" stood in a tight circle, hand in hand and shoulder to shoulder, and "practitioners" stood in a looser outer circle and placed their hands on our shoulders and again were quiet/meditative. Finally there was an opportunity for individual Reiki sessions. Practitioners placed a chair in front of them in a sort of inner circle, then receivers were invited to sit quietly/meditatively in the chairs while the practitioners performed Reiki on them. There were enough practitioners that it only took 2 rounds (some practitioners also received), I observed on the first and received on the second.
When I was receiving, it felt warm, of course, and I also felt a vibration sensation (apparently some people may feel it as a cold sensation as well). I kept my eyes closed during most of it, and I had the sensation of a white light at times, some as flashes, and then at one point later on as a more enveloping sensation. I make no claims as to what these sensations might mean or not mean.
At the end, my practitioner said zie was getting a definite message during the session. Zie said that I was carrying a sword and armor, that I was a warrior (not literally, obviously), and of me laying down (that I needed to lay down) my sword and armor. I have a couple of ideas of what that could mean.
I talked with the Reiki master friend about some of this briefly after the circle ended. Zie said that zie had never felt the vibration sensation. Zie also said that one definitely gets "feelings" from people while practicing on them, but that zie had never gotten a definite "message" to relay (though zie did sometimes share the feelings zie was getting).
Anyways, I felt a definite sense of relaxation and well-being after the circle. Of course, that could be totally attributed to the meditation and friendly atmosphere. Either way, it doesn't really matter to me. I felt better.
