NOT work safe, but should be particularly interesting for those interested in issues surrounding trans/gender & sexuality:

Date: 2006-04-20 01:02 pm (UTC)Since he brought up being curious about what gay men'll think of him in the porn, I'm curious to hear what your perspective is.

Date: 2006-04-20 05:42 pm (UTC)Given that he defines himself as a man (or at least "a man with a cunt") I think he can legitimately claim to be making "gay" porn (especially since the FTM aspect doesn't seem to be any secret in the videos he's in, so if it doesn't interest someone they can choose something else). I would be interested in watching it as something different. And while I don't find Buck Angel particularly attractive I could conceive being aroused by porn including an FTM. I'm not sure what that says about my sexuality but I'm comfortable with the ambiguity. But then I'm a trans-friendly radical queer.
I think a lot, perhaps the majority, of gay men would be somewhere between confused and squicked by just the idea, much less the actual act/imagery (actually, some might be more squicked by the idea than the embodiment, which is interesting to think about). As I'm sure you're aware, being a sexual minority doesn't necessarily exempt you from things like rigid ideas about gender categories, transphobia, misogyny/misandry, etc.
...
Another aspect of all this I think is interesting is that so-called "she-male" porn starring people with feminized breasts and a penis is apparently a long-standing genre, ubiquitous if not mainstream. Especially since common wisdom is that society is much more comfortable with bio-females acting masculine than bio-males acting feminine. Of course, it also seems to be true that MTFs get more media attention than FTMs in general, but this could be explained by the same social reasoning: men wanting to be women is highly unusual and noteworthy. But with porn it seems like there's got to be more to it since you're explicitly adding sexual arousal/attraction to the mix. I think there's got to be a story there. Is there a direct connection to exposure in other media? Is it a perceived unusual/exotic quality of a MTF? Is it that FTMs culturally code a particular configuration of transphobia/homophobia/misogyny that is different from MTFs (i.e., straight men won't watch because its "gay" and gay men won't watch because FTMs are "really" women)? If so, how are MTFs culturally read that allows them a larger niche in the porn industry?
